So this year I decided to help my wife with the garden, she started gardening last year and due to some unforeseen family emergencies had to let it die. Our family raises cattle and we supplement them with syrup tubs. You can not refill these tubs once they have been spent; so we had a slew them laying around from the past years. We decided to use a couple of them for the garden (17 to be exact). The dimensions of the round containers are 24″ x 18″. We went ahead and got 3 cubic yards of a mix of sandy loam and composted mushrooms. We filled up all 17 tubs plus added to last years plots (15′ x 4′ and 12′ x 4′).
We planted seeds during the kids spring break (March 12 – 16). Thinking that we would loose 50% or more of the crop we planted a lot. This includes but not limited to: Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Zucchini, Corn, Sunflowers, Raspberry, Garlic, Carrots, Mint, Big Boy Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Potatoes, Green Peppers, Green Onions, Green Beans, Spinach, Lettuce, Oregano, Chamomile, and Parsley.
To our amazement we didn’t loose anything – so far. We are not the only ones that have noticed our success, the indigenous life (a.k.a. squirrels) has noticed too.
